The tour requires walking from building to building, which while always along sidewalks, could be exhausting for some on hot days. Small children likewise could get tired and would need to be watched- the art is not behind glass or cordons.
If you want to understand why Marfa is the way it is today, you should understand the history behind Chinati. Who knows, you might even enjoy the minimalist art. The people are super cool and you will become cooler after visiting.
Wow, must see in Marfa! Cat is also a great tour guide with lots of insights and explains the sites and art objects very well
I think the staff enjoyed turning away visitors at a place with eccentric and irregular hours. Not sure why I'd really want to make an extra-ordinary effort to travel all that way just to find that the exhibits can't be visited. But granted, it's their exhibits and their right to make it available to the public as they see fit.
You will remember your visit to Chinati for many years to come. Do a tour. The guides will make your experience even more special.
A must see if in Marfa. Beautiful scenery, art, and history explained by wonderful guides. I would recommend the long tour if your schedule allows it- it takes you to three different locations managed by the foundation around town with a lunch break. You will see literally hundreds of pieces of art on this tour from many different artists, and there is so much variety that even non art lovers couldn't get bored.
